Boric acid has long been used to control cockroaches.

Of all the folk remedies for cockroaches, boric acid is known, perhaps, more than anyone else. There are so many recipes for poisonous mixtures with her that it is just right to call pests true gourmets.

Boric acid is applicable in almost any premises and situations. However, for all its versatility, this powder has its own characteristics, positive and negative. Therefore, it is necessary to know how to poison cockroaches with boric acid even before deciding whether to use it: in some cases it may be more appropriate to use other methods.

General properties

Boric acid, under normal conditions, is white grains, similar to scales. It is odorless and tasteless, melts at 170°C, while gradually losing water and changing its chemical composition.

Pure boric acid in powder form

On a note

Borax is a salt of boric acid, widely distributed in nature. Its formula is Na2B4O7*10H2O. Borax is just as toxic to insects as the acid itself, and a borax or borax roach repellent will work equally well.

In nature, the reserves of pure boric acid are very limited. It is part of the mineral sassolina, which is found in small quantities in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. The dissolved substance is present in the composition of many mineral waters.

The so-called "boron powder" is a well-known antiseptic, and therefore is sold in pharmacies both in powder form and in dissolved water or alcohol form. It is its solution in 70% ethyl alcohol that is called boric alcohol.

On a note

Boric alcohol for cockroaches is significantly less effective than other forms of boric acid. This is due to the fact that the Prussians are repelled by the very smell of alcohol, and therefore they will not be able to poison themselves with acid. At the same time, boric powder from cockroaches is practically invisible to them, and the principle of the drug's action is based on this.

The effectiveness of boric acid against cockroaches

For cockroaches, as well as for most other insects, boric acid is a strong poison. The effect of boric acid on cockroaches is that, getting into the insect's digestive tract, it then penetrates through the blood into the nervous system and causes severe irritation of the insect's peripheral nerves. When the lethal dose is exceeded, the pest begins paralysis and dies from suffocation.

Boric acid is highly toxic to cockroaches.

Accordingly, in order for boric acid against cockroaches to be effective, it is necessary that the Prussian swallow it, and preferably in a large amount by the standards of an insect. Therefore, any remedy for cockroaches with boric acid is used in such a way as to force insects to eat it., and questions like “How to kill cockroaches with boric acid?” are in principle incorrect - these pests do not wash themselves with powder, but are poisoned, so to speak, themselves and with pleasure.

It is not at all necessary to cook boron balls from cockroaches with the addition of eggs, flour, vanilla or other components, enticing them with smell and taste. In most cases, it will be sufficient to scatter the substance in places where pests often move - near the baseboards, along the perimeter of the base of the bedside tables, under the sink. After the pest runs over the powder, the particles will remain on its paws. Then, in the shelter, the insect will begin to clean its paws with its jaws and involuntarily swallow the powder itself. With all the consequences.

A solution of boric acid from cockroaches is also quite effective if you introduce it into the composition of edible baits.

If a cockroach ran over the powder of boric acid, then later he will be poisoned by it

For the poisoning of one pest, 2-3 mg of the agent is enough. Therefore, a 10-gram sachet sold in a pharmacy will, in theory, be enough to kill many thousands of insects. However, in practice, the fight against cockroaches with boric acid requires much more poison, since the main part of the drug is spent "idle", and insects never meet with it.

It is interesting

In addition to the Prussians, this tool effectively destroys domestic ants, working on the same principle. But against domestic bugs, boron powder is absolutely useless: these parasites can only feed by sucking blood with their proboscis. Accordingly, even with a strong desire, the bugs will not be able to eat such poison.

Today, due to the frequent and widespread use of boric acid, cases are increasingly becoming known when it does not help.. This is primarily due to the improper use of the substance (insects do not develop resistance to it, therefore, with the right approach, they are always successfully poisoned). However, in such cases, it makes sense to use more modern and easy-to-use means against pests.

Review

“And when we entered the hostel, literally kilograms of this boron powder were scattered under the beds. It does not work against Russian cockroaches, only powerful German drugs are needed ... "

Application rules

In order for cockroaches and boric acid to meet in an apartment, it is necessary either to attract pests to it, or to place poison where insects constantly move.

Boric acid should be used in places where insects accumulate

In the simplest case, it is enough to scatter the substance in thin paths around sinks, toilets and bathrooms. It is from these reservoirs that cockroaches constantly drink water, and having gone “to the watering place” through placers of poison, they are likely to be infected.

On a note

Sometimes it will be effective to put a saucer with a solution of the product near the sink.If the sink itself is wiped dry before poisoning the cockroaches with boric acid, depriving the insects of another source of water, you can force them to drink poison - cockroaches are in great need of regular drinking.

In any case, the paths of the drug should be scattered where cockroaches are most common. Even before you fight cockroaches with boric acid, you can visit your kitchen and bathroom a couple of times at night and check where the mustaches scatter when the light is turned on - these are the entry points to their shelters, near which poison should be placed.

Feedback on the use of boric acid:

“When I saw cockroaches in the apartment, I almost died of horror. I generally don't look at them. I immediately went to the pharmacy, bought boron powder, as advised on the forum, scattered it around the sink and toilet bowl, and did not wash it off for several days. After that, I didn’t see them, even though there weren’t many of them at all.”

Anna, Yaroslavl

Already such measures should give a result: the main part of cockroaches should die out, others, not poisoned, will simply leave the apartment. But if the room is too heavily infected, the fight against cockroaches in the apartment with boric acid should also be carried out with the help of special poisoned baits.

There are a lot of recipes for baits with boron powder, and you can invent them yourself. The simplest and most famous of them are:

  • 40-50 grams of powder is added to one raw egg yolk and everything is thoroughly mixed until a thick mushy mass is obtained.
  • Boric acid is mixed in equal proportions with powdered sugar and flour, after which it is kneaded in water to obtain a dough.
  • 200 grams of boric acid are mixed with 60 gr.powdered sugar, 60 grams of starch and 20-30 grams of vanilla sugar, so much water is added to them to make a thick and sticky mass.
  • One potato is boiled in their skins and peeled. The egg is boiled, the shell is removed from it. Potatoes and eggs are mashed into a puree, to which 1 tablespoon of boric acid is added.

Egg and boric acid

Mixture for making baits

Poisoned baits with boric acid

From the resulting mixtures, small balls or cakes roll, which are laid out in those places where it is easiest for cockroaches to find them. At the same time, it is necessary to carefully monitor that, in addition to such sweets, there is no other food for cockroaches in the room: all products must be hidden in the refrigerator, closed in jars or plastic bags, wipe the crumbs from the table, and take out the garbage at night.

And further: You think that there are no longer normal remedies for cockroaches on the market and nothing will take these insects - no matter how it is!

Cockroach eats poisoned bait

It is advisable to carry out a thorough cleaning and wash the floors and walls behind and under the bedside tables and kitchen furniture before poisoning the cockroaches with boric acid.

The same is true when preparing poisoned drinkers: if cockroaches have a choice - to drink from a new drinker or their usual flower pot or toilet bowl - they will prefer the option they are used to. So cleanliness is the key to success.

The destruction of cockroaches with boric acid never gives a 100% result: insects will definitely remain in the room, finding other sources of food and water, or skillfully bypassing poisoned paths. Nevertheless, if there are very few pests in the apartment, and in general the apartment is clean and well-groomed, it makes sense to resort to this particular remedy.

In dirty old apartments, teeming with cockroaches and surrounded by equally infested rooms, boric acid will at best help to reduce the number of insects a little. Therefore, before removing cockroaches with boric acid, you should clean up the room.

Boric acid in the apartment: is it dangerous or not?

For all its toxicity to cockroaches, boric acid is of little danger to humans and other warm-blooded inhabitants of the apartment - mammals and birds. At one time, pure boric acid was even used to treat wounds as an antiseptic, but doctors found that when used in this way, it often leads to allergies. Therefore, today this substance is being replaced by more effective and safe substances.

Boric acid is classified as a low-risk substance

Review

“It’s so funny for me to hear how moms are afraid to buy boric acid from cockroaches. Like, poisonous. In childhood, instead of green paint, they smeared scratches with it, and nothing arose from anyone. Harass and do not be afraid, nothing will happen to the children.

Marina Vitalievna, Ust-Kamenogorsk

In any case, this weak acid will not cause poisoning in a child or four-legged friend who accidentally finds a cockroach ball or scattered powder. Therefore, it can be safely used, getting rid of cockroaches.

It is interesting

Borax is as low toxic as boric acid. Both of these substances are registered as food additive E284. On the territory of the Russian Federation, this additive is prohibited for use, but if accidentally used, it will not harm the body.

Where to buy and how much does boric acid cost?

Boric acid in the form of a powder or solution is sold in almost all pharmacies, including on the Internet. The price of a bag of 10 grams is approximately 50 rubles, and about 250-500 rubles will be enough to prepare a poison that is enough to be placed throughout the apartment.

Boric acid sachets 10 grams

It makes sense, starting the fight against cockroaches, to buy several bags at once in order to prepare a sufficient number of baits.

In general, compared to the currently popular gels and aerosols, boric acid, of course, is not a very effective tool. Its action is extended in time and very rarely only with its help it turns out to get rid of all the cockroaches in the apartment. But its availability, safety, and low cost make it one of the most widely used home remedies for cockroaches.

If you want to use something much more effective, pay attention to the modern preparation for cockroaches "Lambda Zone". This insecticidal product is practically odorless, safe to use and in practice it turns out to be effective even when cockroaches are resistant to other insecticides.

Good luck with your pest control!

Just a powder scattered in paths is ineffective. But balls of yolk and boric acid powder will help a lot. Even if instead of balls you get a liquid, you can spread it on cardboard and spread it out. They did this in a hostel - there were fewer cockroaches (all over the hostel, and not just in our room).

And we have cockroaches in a private house. Probably, my aunt brought it, becauseshe has been fighting with them in the apartment for decades already. There seem to be few of them, but I burned 15 pieces in January in the stove, both large and fat ones, and a couple of small ones.

So, on February 2, I bought boric acid in the evening, mixed 30 g with boiled egg yolk, well, and a little water, for consistency. Spread out everywhere where I saw and did not see cockroaches.

Results for 3 days: February 3 - not a single reptile caught my eye. February 4 - one “greeted” my slipper, saw it in a crushed form - there was some kind of white mess inside. February 5 - in the morning one shamelessly lay on his back, moving his paws, in the evening the second was caught, but cheerfully ran about his business - the insides were black-white-gray.

I'll post back in a couple of weeks with the results. So far, I’m only trying boric acid, for the purity of the experiment and to determine the effectiveness of the method.

I'm waiting for your result. Like in an apartment, one cockroach will come across to me - I immediately processed it with gels. Which I have not tried, for a short time. They treated it with a special spray, it was not visible for half a year. They reappeared. I smeared it with chalk, so there were even more of them. Yesterday I poured boric acid everywhere behind the baseboards, behind the cabinets. I hope for her.

They began to poison with boric acid with yolk.I mixed 4 yolks and 3 pharmacy bags, spread the balls everywhere. I didn’t notice the effect right away, after two weeks I didn’t see 20-30, but a maximum of 10, after another week - there were a maximum of a couple, after another two - they were gone. In general, I didn’t see a single living thing anymore, but there were just crowds.

The owner, I see, scattered the poison, says that this has never happened before, the former tenants did not poison. Came in the evening with my husband to bring a marafet. They turned on the light and ... They ran everywhere: in the kitchen, in the room, and in the bathroom. There are about 20 pieces. I am 8 months pregnant, I urgently need an apartment, there are no options to look for another. In general, I went, bought a gel, they gave me some kind of dilute. In general, I sprinkled this thing, smeared it with gel, sprayed it with dichlorvos, ran away without breathing. Now I’m going to go buy boric acid and roll the balls. I'll see the result. Then I'll write.

By the way, I lived in a hostel, it seemed to me that I had not seen so many cockroaches. And there, every month, in the morning before work, I passed the gel on the baseboards, behind the refrigerator, and sprinkled the raid and left, by the evening everything would disappear and there were fewer cockroaches, 1-2 pieces.

It so happened that we had cockroaches at home, and not a couple, and not 20-30 pieces, as they say here, but a whole army! I used all sorts of gels, chalk, spray, the result was temporary, they disappeared for a while, and when they appeared, these funds did not work against them. One friend advised me to use boric acid with boiled potatoes. And to my great surprise, cockroaches were dying out, well, just hundreds. I have two kids, so I put the poison at night, in the morning I went to the kitchen, and on the floor they lie in a whole camp! HOWEVER it needs to be supported. I was advised boric acid with an egg. They laid out around the perimeter of all rooms, every half a meter, half a teaspoon (in places where there were especially many of them, they put more). They even laid them out on cabinets and bedside tables. After 3 days, they took out 1.5 buckets of cockroaches. Repeated after 2-3 weeks, I do not remember exactly.

But about 3 months ago, just a nightmare, what started, just a darkness of cockroaches, and at the same time - both small and large, and thin, and fat. I will use boric acid again.
