Rare effect in terms of lethality: testing the Reid aerosol on cockroaches

We test the effectiveness of the Raid aerosol against flying and crawling insects on cockroaches.

All test cockroaches died in 26 seconds when they were directly hit by an aerosol. In the variant, when the insects were in contact with previously treated already dried surfaces, all individuals died after 7 hours and 50 minutes.

Active ingredients of Reid aerosol:

  • cypermethrin (0.10%);
  • imiprotrin (0.031%);
  • pralletrin (0.03%).

The product contains a lavender fragrance. In general, the smell of the aerosol is quite strong, sweetish, not very repulsive. After using the product, the smell lasts for a long time, thereby signaling the processing in the apartment.

All active components of the product are insecticides from the group of pyrethroids, capable of exerting a contact nerve action, poisoning insects both when aerosol particles directly hit chitinous integuments, and after the insect runs over a previously treated and dried surface (in this case, the particles of the product will stick to paws and abdomen + there will be a certain effect of the vapors of the substance).

The manufacturer stated that the Raid from flying and crawling insects has an instant effect - this is also written on the balloon itself.

So, let's check how true this is and whether the drug is actually effective against cockroaches.

Watch video:

0 min 36 sec - For testing, we take two adult individuals of red cockroaches and a nymph of the last age.

In accordance with the instructions for use for the Reid aerosol, for the effective destruction of cockroaches, it is necessary from a distance of about 20-50 cm for 7-9 seconds to treat their habitats and movements with an aerosol jet, as well as possible places of their penetration into the apartment from neighboring rooms.

1 min 01 sec - We make a direct treatment of cockroaches with Raid aerosol and start the stopwatch.

When aerosol particles fall on the chitinous integuments of the insect body, the active substances (all three pyrethroids) begin to gradually penetrate into the hemolymph. Then the insecticides reach the nerve nodes and disrupt the functioning of the nerve cells. As a result, paralysis develops in cockroaches, respiratory and metabolic processes in general are disturbed, which quickly leads to the death of insects.

1 min 30 sec - All test cockroaches are paralyzed (in fact, they died), less than 1 minute has passed from the start of exposure to the agent.

In practice, in an ordinary apartment, it is almost impossible to treat all cockroaches directly with an aerosol, so it is necessary to apply the agent to those surfaces on which insects are highly likely to move in the future.

So, you need to see if the Raid will work if the cockroaches just run on previously treated and dried surfaces.

We test the residual effect of the aerosol after drying:

2 min 10 sec - Spray an empty plastic container. We wait 1 hour until the drug is completely dry.

2 min 26 sec - We put red cockroaches in the container and start the stopwatch.

The tool in this case works more slowly than with direct treatment of insects with an aerosol. This is due to a significantly smaller amount of the drug that comes into contact with the paws and integuments of the body.

And further: Good old Karbofos poisons cockroaches with a bang - watch our video ...

3 min 07 sec - After 4 minutes from the start of the test, the insects show signs of developing paralysis after contact with the treated surface, on which the Reid is completely dry.

3 min 18 sec - 7 hours 50 minutes after the first contact with the treated surface, all cockroaches in the container died.

We draw conclusions:

Raid aerosol from flying and crawling insects really effectively kills cockroaches, both when the aerosol directly hits them, and when insects come into contact with surfaces on which the drug was previously sprayed and dried.

With direct treatment of cockroaches with a remedy, they died in less than 1 minute. This confirms the almost instantaneous effect of the aerosol.

After contact with previously treated and dried surfaces, cockroaches died after 7 hours and 50 minutes.

On a note

Aerosol Raid contains insecticides that have a certain level of toxicity also to humans and pets. Therefore, when using the product, standard safety measures must be observed (in particular, the treatment should be carried out in a respirator, rubber gloves, goggles and long-sleeved clothing). When processing, children and pets should not be in the apartment.

    We bought a raid with lavender, processed the toilet from cockroaches. They climbed out, ran, but in the end, none of them even died. And the smell is so concentrated that you don’t even run out of the apartment yourself. In my opinion, a useless tool.
