Let's talk about the incubation period of head lice

Head lice are very highly specialized parasites, not only in terms of the nature of their diet, but also in terms of their place of existence. They can live only on the scalp of a person and his closest relatives - some species of monkeys. Accordingly, the life cycle and features of biology, including the incubation period of head lice, are largely adapted and depend on the lifestyle of the person himself.

On a note

You should immediately define the terms. The incubation period of a disease is usually understood as the period between infection with it and the first clinical manifestations. This definition is not suitable for infecting a person with head lice - parasites will start to bite a person immediately after infection, but due to their small number, the patient may not feel this or not attach importance to individual unpleasant sensations.

The incubation period of a louse in biology is the time of development of the louse eggs. Given that lice eggs are called nits, for an entomologist, the incubation period of lice and nits is essentially the same thing.Given the fact that many readers consider lice precisely as a disease, when describing the incubation period of lice, we will further consider it both in the biological and, so to speak, in the popular sense.

The incubation period for lice: how quickly they begin to pester after infection

After infection, the first bites of lice occur already in the first hours after the parasites enter the human hairline - these insects cannot go without food for more than a few days. However, the bites of one or two individuals that managed to crawl onto a healthy person are not particularly felt and often do not attract attention. Therefore, at this time it is too early to talk about any manifestations of pediculosis.

The real symptoms of lice on the head begin to be felt after three to four weeks. During this time, the nymphs of the first generation manage to hatch and grow up, which are already massively starting to bite the scalp of a person.

In the photo - an adult head louse and nymphs of different ages

Under favorable conditions, after three weeks, the second generation of lice appears on the head, and due to the large number they already cause severe itching and well-defined discomfort.

On a note

Pediculosis is a complex of symptoms that are characteristic of people with a severe infestation of lice. In medical practice, pediculosis is considered a disease and manifests itself in the form of heterogeneous symptoms caused by the activity of lice: itching, pustules, the appearance of spots and allergic rashes.

Thus, in the case under consideration, such an incubation period for lice can be considered equal to three weeks. It is during this period that all the signs of pediculosis appear on the head: nits, irritation, itching, as well as the possibility of infecting other people.

It is interesting

Depending on the living conditions of a person, the incubation period for the development of pediculosis may vary. For example, in winter or northern latitudes, when a person’s head is constantly covered with a hat, and the room is quite heated, lice develop faster - sometimes a full cycle of their reproduction takes place in 16 days. In middle latitudes, when a person's head is often open, parasites usually take longer to develop.

Lice reproduction: details about nits and nymphs

The head louse is an insect with incomplete metamorphosis. A larva hatches from its egg, outwardly similar to an adult, but much smaller and incapable of reproduction. It feeds on the same thing that adult insects feed on - human blood - she molts three times and turns into an adult insect.

On a note

The concepts of "nit" and "louse egg" should not be confused. A nit is a formation of an egg and a cocoon of a sticky substance that keeps the structure on the hair. We can say that this is a kind of cocoon.

Photograph of a head louse nit under an electron microscope

The nit is firmly attached to the hair and has a special cap through which the nymph is selected when it is ripe.

Such a larva, which is generally similar to an adult insect, is called a nymph. The nymph stage is also characteristic of other insects, such as cockroaches, grasshoppers, and bedbugs.

The nymph stage in development is not only in head lice, but also, for example, in cockroaches

It is important that each stage of development in lice lasts a relatively short time, and therefore the life span of these insects is short, and the reproduction rate is quite high. It is customary for parasitologists to call an insect that has just emerged from the egg a larva, and a larva that has already molted a nymph.

Terms of reproduction and incubation period of lice

The timing of the development of lice at each stage is different:

  1. The maturation period of nits is from 5 to 8 days, depending on the temperature. The optimal conditions for nits, providing a minimum incubation period for nits, are average air humidity and a temperature of about 31 ° C. At temperatures above 40°C and below 22°C, egg development stops and larvae do not hatch. In the photo - an adult head louse and nits
  2. The first instar larva develops from one day at a temperature of 30°C to ten days at a temperature of 10°C.
  3. The nymph of the first age develops for 5 days.
  4. The nymph of the second age develops for eight days and turns into an imago - an adult insect.
  5. Adult insects begin to breed after the first meal after molting. Usually, within 1-2 days after the transformation of the nymph into an adult insect, females and males mate, after which the females lay 3-4 eggs every day.

How long it takes for lice to hatch from eggs is greatly affected by temperature. At 25-26°C, lice hatch in 7-8 days, and at 32-33°C, in 5-6 days.

Adult head louse and nymph

How quickly lice hatch does not depend on how often you wash your head or even get your hair wet.

The time of the general reproductive cycle of insects also depends on how much the nits ripen. The minimum development time from egg to egg is 16 days, while the maximum can stretch up to two months.

On a note

Head lice have almost no periods of hunger strike. They constantly live on the scalp, never leaving the human body. Therefore, such factors as the presence or absence of food are practically absent in the life of these parasites.

The maximum lifespan of an adult head louse is 46 days. During this time, the female manages to lay up to 140 eggs.

And further: Creepy photos of head lice, including macro photography (the article has more than 50 comments)

How about other species?

The incubation period of lice of other species differs little from that of the head louse.

So, in a body louse, belonging to the same species, but adapted to life on clothes, nymphs hatch in 5-8 days. And the average development time is 3-4 weeks - like the head louse.

The incubation period for the development of nits in body lice is 5-8 days

On a note

The sometimes used expression "nits hatch" is basically wrong. The lice hatch into nymphs, and the nits themselves are laid by the female. Therefore, instead of "nits hatch" one should say "larvae hatch from nits."

The incubation period of pubic lice is approximately 6 days, and the development period of the larva is about 18 days. Their difference from head lice is that an adult pubic louse lives no more than 30 days, and one female can lay a maximum of 50 eggs.

Pubic louse - its incubation period is approximately 6 days (time of maturation of nits)

In pubic lice, nit larvae do not hatch at temperatures below 22°C.

Methods of dealing with nits

It is quite possible and even necessary to destroy and poison nits at any stage of their development. For this, special shampoos with effective insecticides are usually used - Pedilin, Parazidoz, Nittifor, Pedex, Hygia. Previously, even kerosene was used against lice, but in terms of efficiency and ease of use, it is, of course, significantly inferior to modern shampoos.

Shapun Pedilin - helps to cope with head lice

It is important that even after a bald haircut, the head must be washed with shampoo and held under a plastic bag, since nits and lice themselves can remain on the skin and near the hair follicles. And when using a shampoo that does not have the ability to kill lice eggs, you need to rinse your head with it again after 5-6 days.

And of course, always and everywhere it is necessary to follow the rules of hygiene: do not dry yourself with someone else's towel, do not use someone else's comb.It is known that head lice can survive in water for up to two days, so even swimming in public places can be fraught.

Be carefull!

Simple hair dye works well with them. The first time painted, the second in a week.

Yeah. No matter how. I was painted just the next day, as I found lice on my eldest daughter. Naturally, I immediately processed it. A week later, my daughter processed again. And I found lice. So it’s not true that they don’t go to dyed hair. And it's not true that head paint saves. Only if you light up. Another paint does not kill everyone. And the eggs don't care at all.

So their paint kills, and not the fact that they do not sit on dyed hair.

Exactly! I painted my hair when I didn't know I had lice. They were brought by a child from school. I shaved my husband and child, then treated them all, and a couple of weeks later I dyed my hair, so what? It turned out that I have lice. Terrible, it's shaking! At least cry, again, wash and freeze everything on a new one.

The first time I saw lice in my head was in the fifth grade. The second time was when I worked for a reputable company. In the first case, it would not cost anything for a little boy to shave his head, but in the second case, this would not be allowed. But, thank God, he found an antiv comb, and he was cured with it.

You can get rid of lice relatively easily, just by sorting through the entire head. Every hair! Day 1 - treat the hair with vinegar (dilute with water), vinegar peels off the nit glue from the hair. Dry your hair, divide it into ponytails and gradually sort out each of the nits. After removing all the nits (I filmed the child from 8 am to 12 am), immediately treat with PerMin (an inexpensive remedy, you need 2 pieces for long hair). Lotion or spray. Keep 1 hour. Rinse well. After 1 week - again divide into ponytails. After going through one tail, coat it with PerMin. Twist with a bun, secure with a hairpin. And so each small area (on our head 20 buns). The main thing is to coat the sorted one so that the louse does not run in there (I sorted it out for 4 hours). Wash off after 30 min. All 2 times I caught lice with tweezers. 1 time 40 large. 2 times only small ones and a few nits, which I missed 1 time. For 3 times - another week later - I went over it and, just in case, treated it with permin. All.

3 years ago, my daughter was also beaten. Bought all the most expensive. Bullshit! I found the cheapest - PerMin (about 25-30 UAH). It works well only on lice, and only choose nits!

The daughter was admitted to the hospital, and after 2 days she began to scratch her head. I looked, and there were 25 nits, the orderlies say that they didn’t have them, but she already had them. I'm sure it's from their pillows. Most importantly, the bedding was from home.

If you read, then one individual lays 3-4 pieces per day. And 25, it turns out, in a couple of days 3-4 individuals will quite cope) Well, you don’t need a lot of such animals to begin with.

Guys, hellebore water is a very good remedy, it was removed even from a 3-year-old child. Yes, it is necessary that there are no serious wounds (observe the child during the procedure), apply as quickly as possible (with gloves) so as not to breathe in fumes, and be sure to wear a hat or bag on your head. They kept it for 40 minutes. Then wash off. Comb out the hair with a small comb. Repeat the treatment with hellebore water after 5-7 days. This is where the main meaning is laid down: the incubation period of the egg is 5-7 days, plus another 5-7 days the period until the puberty of the insect, when it is able to lay eggs. Just from those nits that survived after the first treatment, a larva hatches, but it is not yet capable of reproduction, then we finally kill them and no new eggs ... EVERYTHING !! And be sure to wash all linen, things at a temperature not lower than 60 degrees, then iron them.Process combs, you can soak in vinegar for a day, and then rinse in hot water. Hats, if you cannot wash according to the instructions, put them in the freezer for 1-2 days. Health to everyone!

I wiped it off a little and went with a comb through my hair to comb out for 4 days in a row, and repeated the same thing on day 4-5 with camphor alcohol. Helped. My niece did not get out of the lice after shelling, for 2 months they could not cope with them. Only when she calmed down, the lice were removed with benzyl benzoate - overnight on the hair under the bag, rinsed in the morning with a solution of vinegar (two parts of water, part of vinegar), and then combed out.

Good day. Completely agree with the previous comment! Don't experiment. We were also treated by Nyuda, the price of the issue is 500-600 rubles, but there is no smell, packages, burns. And the hair is intact, and the child is calm!

Full Marks.Only they are saved. And children can carry from school. We must go and let the doctors check it. If there is someone in the class, then the child can constantly walk with “favorite animals”. If you remove the source of infection from your child, and in the classroom, then to no avail.

This is some kind of horror! This morning, as they say, we finished the fight with living creatures, my daughter went to the music room. And in the evening I scratch for prevention - and again, friends, at least don't let me out of the house. So I think: lice do not multiply at such a speed. I already went to the doctor's school, asking them to better look at the children's heads. And the doctor tells us that he probably catches at home. But family members don't. What to do, I don't know anymore...

So many shampoos and sprays have been tried. The scallop is our best friend. And I don’t know what to do, at least don’t let the child out of the house!

My daughter (she is 4.5 years old) also found lice. We bought Para Plus spray and Pediculen shampoo, but alas, nothing helped, I even had to cut my hair, we cried together. They combed out, but live nits come across. What else can I buy for processing, I don’t know anymore ...

My daughter had lice 3 years ago, a couple plus + comb + hair straightener helped us (it burns the remaining nits very well). Now I brought it back from school ... I bought Medifox, they process it in sanitary and epidemiological stations, it's inexpensive. After treatment, all lice were dead. Plus a comb, plus an iron every day. Hopefully we'll get it done in a week. Today is day 3 and my head is clear.

We use a hair straightener every day, a special comb, we are going to color our hair. It's not the first time we've been sick in 16 years. When the children were small, permethrin helped (with daily inspection and combing out nits for a month). And it is better to cut your hair so that it is easier to recover.

Dear intruders! Quickly and effectively - hellebore water, hold on hair for 20-30 minutes, wrapping them in a bag. Hair straightener. Hour of work - and say goodbye to the pets.

Agree! Hellebore water is the cheapest and most effective remedy! I keep 1 hour. Lice are definitely dead, nits are 50% dry, 50% live. Repeat the procedure after 2-3 days.

Don't wait 7 days! You don't know how long the lice will hatch from the nits! And, of course, comb out. Rinsing with diluted vinegar makes it easier to comb out, they themselves fall off and look like dandruff.

I read all the comments. I want to advise something else ... Hair balm. Any ... Apply in the bathroom and so along with the balm and comb out. Nits, of course, are not removed, but that's all the lice - for sure! Comb out as long as possible.

Hm. Do not consider me some kind of laced clean, but my personal opinion in relation to insects (any) is extremely negative. Well, I hate these creatures, I'm not afraid of them, I just disdain them, but very much! The only ones I recognize are bees (honeybees), and butterflies are beautiful - until you look closer. And up close, everything is the same (chitin, antennae, paws ... brrr). As for lice, this is an interesting question in general. If I understand correctly, this is not only a matter of hygiene, but also a matter of nervous breakdown (it seems like they sit down with great pleasure on a person suffering from a headache). Personally, he himself did not have such “happiness” as lice.Pah-pah)) Well, and so, the abomination is still. And as I heard, it is necessary to fight it immediately and radically. Otherwise, as I understand it, it's better not to know. Health to everyone!

Tell me what to do? 41 times I already take out lice to my daughter, every 2 weeks. The main thing is that I find nits, but I don’t find lice ... I poison every week with vinegar. What to do, help!

Well helps turpentine ointment. Plentifully lubricate the hair and for 2 hours under the bag. Lice and nits die at the same time. Disadvantage - very oily hair, difficult to wash.

It is difficult to say which method is better, but with more information from personal experience, you can find something for your case. I will suggest for long hair and not only. During the week, in the morning and in the evening, rinse with a stream of water, 50 degrees (this does not withstand the body of a newly hatched louse, but be careful, pour on the hair for at least 5 minutes). And, of course, comb out. Wear hats, change them every day. Well, the processing of the bed, clothes, room, of course. Bless you.

Kerosene leaves terrible burns (passed). Triple cologne - all night, and even under a bag - a burn is guaranteed + a trail of fragrance for a month)) Alcohol - the same thing (burn). We were treated with Hygia shampoo - although a little expensive, but reliable. Kills not only lice, but also nits. Plus a comb to comb out the dead.

Hairspray helped perfectly - they sprayed thickly on each row, it formed a crust on the head. They left it like that for the night, the lice simply fell off, not a single one was alive. The nits were soaked in dilute vinegar to remove the glue that attached them to the hair and combed out. A hot curling iron also helps, the nit eggs simply burn out.

For my daughter, it's like hard labor. We have a dysfunctional family in our garden that infects us all the time. But thank God we left and everything passed. And that's how I got rid of it. Well, firstly, a spray to remove the lice themselves. And take care of the whole family. Secondly, shampoo - I wash my hair with it every 5 days (I follow this for 15 days). And thirdly, rewash things. And dichlorvos for the bed where we sleep. And that's it. Know that it is very very difficult to get it out at once. You have to repeat the process.
