Today, ultraviolet insect repellant lamps (also called insect killers) are gaining popularity - but are they really as effective as consumers say they are? Let's figure it out...

It should be borne in mind that insect lamps are very effective means for the destruction of flying insects: mosquitoes, flies, moths and other midges. Such devices are widely used today against various pests and parasites in residential premises, on livestock farms, in cottages and household plots, in gardens and orchards. Often they are also bought to protect the premises of grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, to destroy pests in warehouses.

Quite often, insect lamps are bought to protect the premises of shops and restaurants.

At the same time, the lamp for the destruction of insects is not a universal remedy, it will be ineffective against cockroaches, bedbugs, ants and other crawling insects, as well as against some diurnal butterflies. And the reason for this lies in the special principle of operation of such devices - let's look at it in more detail ...

The principle of operation of lamps from insects

It is known that mosquitoes, various moths and flies tend to flock to the light at dusk and at night - with the same willingness they will fly into the light of a trap lamp. Moreover, the ultraviolet light emitted by the lamp of the device attracts these insects to an even greater extent than the "ordinary" radiation of the visible spectrum.

Ultraviolet light attracts a large number of flying insects.

The ultraviolet lamp in the device is protected by a fine mesh, which is under high voltage. When an insect attracted by ultraviolet tries to approach the light source, it inevitably hits the grid and immediately receives a deadly electrical discharge (therefore, the device is sometimes popularly called an electric shock lamp from insects). After that, the remains of the insect fall onto a special tray, which must be periodically cleaned during operation.

The photograph shows the remains of insects destroyed by the lamp.

On a note

Some types of flying insects are not attracted to ultraviolet radiation (for example, certain species of diurnal butterflies). Accordingly, UV lamps will be ineffective against these insects.

It should be noted that despite the emitted ultraviolet, insecticidal lamps from insects are quite safe for humans: the wavelength of the emitted light is chosen in such a way as not to cause ozonation of the surrounding air and not damage the eye tissue, even if you look at the device for a long time (very soft ultraviolet). In addition, the energized grid in the device is isolated by a protective grill, through which even a child cannot stick their fingers, but insects can freely penetrate.

The insect exterminator has a special protective grid so that a person cannot touch the electric shock metal mesh.

In some insect exterminators, special fans are additionally installed next to the lamp, which draw close-flying insects onto the grate. This increases the efficiency of the device, but at the same time slightly increases its consumption of electricity.

On a note

The power consumption of household insect lamps is usually from 8 to 30 W, and the number of lamps themselves in the device may be different. Household devices are designed to kill flying insects in separate small rooms.Industrial traps have a lamp power of up to 80 W and can be used indoors up to 200 m² and even outdoors.

Types and brands of exterminators

Despite the general principle of operation of UV lamps from insects, they are classified according to the method of killing insects and according to the field of application.
So, for example, there are devices in which insects are destroyed by an electric discharge, and there are also models in which glue is applied to the grate.

The glue-based flying insect lamp is intended for rooms where, according to fire safety requirements, the use of devices with an electric discharge is prohibited - for example, in warehouses, dryers, silos. In such a lamp, the grating with glue is removable and requires periodic replacement (usually every few days).

And further: We caught bedbugs and tested the effect of GEKTOR powder on them - a pretty killer thing turned out to be ...

According to the field of application, there are:

  1. Household appliances used in residential premises. Energy, Samurai, Mo El and others are known among them. This is what a household exterminator of flying insects might look like.
  2. Lamps designed to control insects in public places. They are produced by Mo El, Well, Hilton. But such devices are often used, for example, in grocery stores.
  3. As well as industrial insect exterminators, which are used in warehouses, barns and livestock farms. The largest range of such lamps is manufactured by Well. The photo shows an industrial lamp flying insect exterminator.

Before you buy a lamp from insects, you should first estimate the area of \u200b\u200bthe territory that it will have to protect. If the area is large, then several devices may be required.

Rules for the use of insect lamps

Ideally, each insect repellant lamp should be placed in a place in the room or area where it will be clearly visible from any point in it. After that, the device is connected to the outlet, the operating mode is selected and the lamp turns on.

The better the UV lamp can be seen from different points of the room, the more efficient the exterminator will work.

It is very effective to place a lamp between the final target of insects (for example, a sleeping person) and the place where they enter the room. For example, if mosquitoes fly in through the window, then the insect exterminator should be between the window and the bed. Otherwise, the mosquito will first bite the person on the bed, and then fly to the anti-mosquito lamp.

In the season when electric shock lamps are used constantly, they need to be cleaned regularly. To do this, the device must be disconnected from the outlet, then a special tray for insects is removed - you just need to shake it out and, if necessary, wipe it with a damp cloth.

In lamps with an adhesive grille, the grille itself needs to be changed every few days.

Review

“Neither fumigators, nor any ultrasonic repellers helped us. The problem with mosquitoes was solved with the help of a Hilton UV lamp. Such a lamp has a night mode against insects, when it practically does not shine, but attracts mosquitoes. For the sake of interest, in the morning I took out a bowl on which dead mosquitoes fall. There were fifteen of them! And this is in one night. It is not clear how we used to manage to sleep at all with such a number of them ... "

Well lamps: prices, specifications and reviews

Well specializes mainly in the sale of fairly powerful industrial insect lamps, although there are several household models. In the lines of her devices there are lamps with a power of 8 W and a price of 4,000 rubles to exterminators with a power of 80 W and a cost of over 10,000 rubles.

And further: Insect bites that really work

Well company produces quite powerful devices that are often used in industrial enterprises.

Household lamps from Well insects are represented by three models of relatively bulky, but quite effective devices. Their prices range from 4000-6000 rubles.

Industrial lamp traps of this manufacturer are primarily designed to protect warehouses from moths, livestock farms - from dung flies and horseflies, household plots - from pests of garden and garden crops.

With the help of an insect lamp, you can fight, for example, flies and horseflies on farms.

From Well you can buy both insect exterminators themselves and accessories for them - spare parts, replaceable grilles, UV lamps.

Review:

“We bought a Well WE-150-2SW goat protection lamp for our small private farm. Horseflies and gadflies simply pestered them, and two kids this year died from gadflies in the nasopharynx. The lamps work perfectly, the barn is constantly dimly lit, so that the flies flock to the light at once. You have to shake them out constantly, every day the pan is completely filled.

Mo El and the destruction of insects with their help

The products of the Italian company Mo El are focused primarily on household needs: lamps for home use are well represented in the company's catalog. Mo El has many models - more than 35 - and many of them use original technical solutions.

For example, MO-BUTTERFLY 700 is designed to kill moths. The trap is a wide pallet suspended horizontally, on which a sheet of glue and a lamp are placed:

Such a trap lamp from Mo El allows you to catch butterflies and other flying insects on a sticky tray.

The MO-PLICK 398 works according to the same principle, but in it the lamp is closed with an inclined panel with glue, so that the trap works in the night light mode in the room:

An example of a MO-PLICK 398 insect killer lamp that can be used as a night light.

Mo El also has a lot of devices that destroy insects with an electric discharge. And it is this company that has lamps in the INSECTIVORO line, equipped with a fan for sucking insects:

Devices of the INSECTIVORO line suck insects with the help of a fan.

Prices for Mo El insect lamps range from 1,500 to 10,000 rubles.

Hilton lamps

To put it simply, Hilton are German insect lamps. The company produces lamps for apartments, houses and restaurants.

The simplest Hilton Black Monster GP-4 device has a power of 4 W and costs only about 400 rubles. It is quite enough to protect one small room.

The Hilton Black Monster GP-4 lamp is suitable for insect protection in a small room.

The largest Hilton Power Insect Killer BN-30W lamps cost about 2,000 rubles and are designed for placement in cafes and small warehouses.

And such a device can be used in the premises of shops and cafes.

Review

“Don't chase powerful insect lamps, it's pointless. We bought a small hanging Hilton, a black one, for 350 rubles, turned it on and after that we didn’t see a single mosquito at home. In general, the device works amazingly. There is almost no light from him, and he does not interfere with sleep.

Olga, Krasnoyarsk

In general, lamps against flying insects are one of the most convenient and effective means. In comparison, hanging adhesive tapes are prohibited for use in some types of premises, and in the same restaurants and cafes they cannot be used due to unaesthetic.

In restaurants and cafes, the use of adhesive tapes against insects is impractical due to unaesthetic.

Aerosol preparations are sometimes undesirable for use in residential areas, especially when allergy-prone children live there. Also, not everyone is ready to breathe insecticides evaporating all night (and every night) from the electric fumigator.

In some cases, the use of an electric fumigator will not be the best solution - especially for those people who do not want to breathe different chemicals...

In all these cases, it is the lamps that can come to the rescue and provide reliable protection of the premises from flying insects.

If you have personally used such devices, be sure to write your review at the bottom of this page.

I excluded electrofumigators right away, the smell is specific chemical. The husband caught fire according to the scheme to make a mosquito exterminator lamp. In principle, he succeeded, and although she looked unsightly, but indeed, the mosquitoes became much smaller. And the neighbor has a purchased exterminator, the view, of course, is much more attractive, but it destroys insects in the same way. Why pay more?
