Let's look at the main possible causes of head lice.

By and large, there are very few reasons why lice appear on the head: these parasites are not able to fly, jump far (like fleas, for example) and cannot even run fast. However, their ability to appear even in people who are clean and living in good conditions is simply amazing, and therefore it is necessary to know where lice come from on the head, at least in order to protect ourselves from this scourge and protect our loved ones from infection. Especially the children.

The main and only causes of the appearance of lice are various cases of their transmission from an infected person to a healthy one. Lice, unlike, for example, helminths, have no hosts other than humans, and therefore it is impossible to infect them with food and even in nature.

Lice are transmitted from infected people to healthy people.

But there are a lot of ways to transmit lice from one person to another: in general, the appearance of lice on the head is directly related to the specific situation and circumstances in which a new potential carrier of these parasites falls.

On a note

Lice do not appear out of nowhere, they cannot be hibernating under the skin, much less in bumps on the head, although such ideas are widespread even today. Lice are external parasites and are found either on the skin and hair or on clothing. Also, lice in humans do not appear from dogs, cats and other domestic animals: due to their narrow specialization, they can only live on humans. Accordingly, dog and cat lice never appear in humans.

Review

“I was in shock. Where do lice come from in a person, if my child has never touched dogs or cats, is always dressed on the street, does not take anything in his mouth. In any case, the lice were removed in a day, although now we know how it is done.

Evgenia, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

For a person, lice and their eggs are unpleasant - nits. And potentially dangerous as carriers of infections - more on that below. Lice are mobile and look like tiny bugs. And nits look like white dots on the hair, firmly glued and difficult to destroy. These "points" are a kind of bags, each of which contains an egg.

photo of nits on hair

Nits appear almost immediately after an adult female gets on the hair of her victim. When laying eggs on the hair, the female glues them with a special adhesive composition - and subsequently, it is thanks to him that it is so difficult to remove the nits from the hair. Mothers of long-haired girls probably know from experience how tedious the process of combing and extracting nits from hair after treatment with one or another remedy. It is impossible not to comb out the lice eggs after treatment: it is worth skipping only one nit, and in a couple of days the head will again “swarm with lice”. Nits are extremely tenacious, and therefore, looking ahead a little, let's say: an effective lice remedy is only one that kills both lice and nits at once - and ideally also helps to soften the very glue with which nits are attached to the hair (to facilitate removal nits).

Nits themselves do not spread and are not transmitted from person to person.Only in exceptional cases, hair with nits from one person can get on the head of another, but even so, the likelihood of further development of pediculosis in an infected person is practically excluded (a single individual will not be able to reproduce).

Lice transmission methods

There are many ways to transmit lice. The main and leading in the spread of pediculosis is close bodily contact between the infected and the infected. Lice on the head appear, for example, when kissing, sexual intercourse, joint games, wrestling, and other cases of touching the head of one person with the head of another.

Head lice can be easily transferred from one person's head to the head of another through close contact.

On a note

It is important to remember about the different types of lice and the shape of each type. Pubic and body lice appear for reasons somewhat different from those for head lice.

Pediculosis in children often appears during joint games, constant brawls, and simply with direct communication. Practice shows that parasites in children's groups spread at lightning speed.

It is important to understand that the reasons for the appearance of lice in children do not always lie in their violation of some hygiene rules: parasites equally easily infect children with a clean head and those who have not washed for a long time.

Lice are sometimes infested by some other means of transmission. For example, the causes of head lice may be:

  • transmission of adult insects, nymphs and nits through shared combs, towels and pillows;
  • bathing in baths or baths without changing the water between bathers.Lice easily tolerate being in water and can do without oxygen for a long time, continue to multiply at temperatures from +12 to +44 degrees (and survive at lower or higher temperatures) - therefore, quite a lot of parasites can swim in the bathroom after a lice person;
  • Sharing hats, especially fur hats. In them, lice may not distinguish between human hair and fur on a hat and remain on the headdress itself after wearing.

The video below explains in detail how lice appear in a person and what this can lead to:

On a note

Linen lice are infested almost exclusively by transmission through clothing. Cases of their transmission through bodily contact take place as an exception. It is also rare that the spread of linen lice occurs through hygiene and household items. Linen louse is considered the main companion of humanitarian disasters and wars: most often these lice start up in refugee camps, among vagrants and soldiers.

Sometimes Lyuli find that they have lice almost immediately after sexual intercourse. But this is more characteristic of pubic lice: on the human body, they live mainly on the pubis and in the armpits. Not surprisingly, pubic pediculosis is sometimes referred to as a sexually transmitted disease.

It is interesting

Cases have been repeatedly noted when pubic lice appeared after swimming together in natural reservoirs. Such precedents are most numerous in overpopulated areas of India, Cambodia and Laos. Of all the lice, it is the pubic lice that most actively spreads through the water. At the same time, the main danger is the fact that after such a transfer, lice often appear in children, and sometimes in places that are uncharacteristic for them: on the eyebrows, eyelashes and head.

Children as the main risk group

Children are more susceptible to head lice. There are several reasons for this:

  • lack of inculcated hygiene skills - lice in children often appear after sharing the same clothes, bedding, toys.
  • Propensity for closer contacts - hugs, fights, games with constant contact of heads are absolutely normal for children. In such conditions, lice in children start up quickly and spread even when they are not yet particularly noticeable at the main source of parasites.
  • Greater inclination and frequency of contacts with peers - in general, the social circle of children is wider than that of adults, and the likelihood that among familiar children there will be a "nit-bearer" is generally higher. That is why lice appear in children in many cases, regardless of the social status of the parents.

The incidence of head lice in children is much higher than in adults.

In addition, the reason why lice appear more often in children than in adults is that children are less selective in choosing acquaintances. Children equally easily make contact with well-groomed peers, and with those who live in poor sanitary conditions and are even vagrants.

Important

The reason for the appearance of lice in young children can be quite commonplace - a child can become infected from a sick mother. He definitely cannot avoid this contact, and it all depends on how the mother herself approaches the issue of ensuring her safety.

Optimal conditions for the spread of lice

Important reasons for the appearance of lice in a large number of people include the relevant social and sanitary conditions in which people live. This explains the fact that today lice are especially common in developing countries.

One of the reasons for the spread of lice is the poor sanitary conditions in which people live.

The following factors and causes of lice in humans are particularly conducive to the spread of parasites and the diseases they cause:

  • low cultural level of society as a whole, lack of well-established rules of strict personal hygiene
  • promiscuity, from which pubic lice mainly start
  • established and well-formed teams and groups of people. Due to the reduced contact barriers in such groups and, as a result, kissing, hugging, and other bodily contacts accepted as the norm, lice are especially numerous here and spread at a very high speed.
  • Circumstances that bring together a large number of people - in prisons, field camps, refugee camps, lice reservations for each individual person appear in the order of things - it is extremely difficult to avoid contact with the infected or their household items.

In general, in the world, lice on the head appear more often in people in the winter, when most of the time the population spends indoors in fairly close contact with each other. In countries with a high standard of living, there are other peaks in the number of head lice infestations: from the beginning of autumn, when children infected in the summer come to school, in early spring, when children begin to be on the streets more and communicate with extra-social elements.

How lice do not exactly appear

Along with scientifically proven methods of infecting lice, there are various folk myths and stereotypes that try to explain why lice appear on the head. Among them:

  • “Lice comes from the nerves” is a very famous myth, which even today is used to explain any case of lice infestation.
  • “Lice doze in the scalp and crawl out with a weakened immune system or severe stress” is no less nonsense. Lice are not able to live under the skin, and by and large, they do not care who they bite - a person with a weakened immune system or a completely healthy one.
  • "Lice can jump from dogs and cats" - human lice are not able to live on animals, and lice that infect cats and dogs cannot feed on humans. Therefore, such a cause of lice in humans is also incorrect.

And further: Just don't burn your hair - vinegar is really effective against lice and nits (the article has over 100 comments)

Lice cannot come from nerves, weakened immune systems, or come from animals

In any case, whatever the reasons for the appearance of head lice and whatever lice appear on clothes and bed, you need to know a few simple prevention rules that will provide reliable protection against these parasites.

Lice protection: how to avoid the appearance of parasites

Tips for preventing lice infestation are quite simple, but not everyone can follow them:

  • it is necessary to avoid close contacts with unfamiliar people, especially those whose social status raises certain doubts.
  • The absence of casual sexual intercourse is a reliable guarantee of a life without pubic lice and a decrease in the risk of infection with head lice.
  • You can not use other people's combs, clothes, bedding, hairpins and hair ties.
  • Prevention of pediculosis in children includes regular checks on the condition of the hair - often even being heavily infected, they do not admit it, fearing to be ridiculed by their peers.

The first signs of the appearance of lice are itching, at first quite weak, as well as the appearance of white dots on the hair and bites on the scalp.Later, when lice multiply, spots, rashes and allergic reactions appear.

Signs of head lice

It is worth noting that we now live in a civilized world, and the epidemic of typhus, as in the 20s. XX century in the USSR (carriers of typhus are lice), we are unlikely to be threatened. But, like any blood-sucking parasites, lice can carry other infections from which the immune system can suffer. Not to mention the fact that by combing the head (itchy from lice), we run the risk of introducing both infections and dirt into the wounds that have appeared. Therefore, as soon as you notice at least one louse or nits in yourself or your children, you need to urgently take action.

Pediculosis treatment: folk recipes and effective remedies for lice and nits

Some still believe that lice can be removed by "home" remedies. For example, kerosene lotions, alcohol compresses, hellebore water or garlic oil. But no - this is not the best way to get rid of lice and nits:

  • Most folk remedies are applied "by eye" - and the lack of an accurate, verified dosage is fraught with unpleasant consequences for the scalp and hair: local allergic reactions - itching, rash, dry skin; delayed reactions - from aggressive exposure, hair can dry out, become brittle, fall out or stop growing.
  • It is difficult to call folk remedies harmless: by themselves, alcohol, kerosene or essential (from oils) vapors can be dangerous to inhale. And it will take a long time to inhale them, because ...
  • ... folk remedies require a long exposure - absolutely everything is applied for 2-4 hours on the head, and for maximum effect, the head is still covered with a plastic cap or film. Is such a long "steam" effect useful for young children, allergy sufferers or asthmatics? ..
  • Absolutely all folk remedies need to be applied not once, but several times - since, as mentioned above, lice and nits are extremely tenacious, the procedure will need to be repeated until the parasites are completely removed.

The second way to treat pediculosis is to buy a ready-made remedy for lice and nits in a pharmacy. Fortunately, there are a lot of them now, for every taste (sprays, shampoos, ointments, etc.). What to consider when choosing a pharmacy product:

  • Look at the ingredients - most inexpensive products include silicones and synthetic pediculocidal agents (such as dimethicone). First, they can cause allergies. Secondly, in most cases, these substances in the composition are flammable, and after treatment with such preparations, the hair cannot be dried with a hairdryer (they may catch fire).
  • Read the instructions - depending on the composition, the product may not work in one go. It may require not one, but 2-3 treatments in a few days. In addition, only lice are sensitive to many drugs, but not nits. Remember that after almost any remedy (perhaps, except for Leisner shampoo - about it below), combing out the nits with a special comb is required. It is impossible to allow at least one nit to remain on the hair - you will have to start all over again.
  • Keep in mind that the often advertised and once popular permethrin products no longer work. The fact is that lice have developed resistance to permethrin over the decades. Therefore, buying products containing permethrin most likely means throwing away money (in fact, their effectiveness can only be due to many hours of combing). In Europe, such drugs have been banned for production and sale for 5-7 years, and in Russia since the summer of 2018.

Today, Leisner shampoo is considered the easiest to use and effective remedy for lice and nits. This is officially recognized by the Research Institute of Disinfectology of the Russian Federation: the drug is included in the list of highly effective pediculocidal drugs.

Lice Shampoo Leisner

"Leisner" was developed by the German scientist Heinz Mehlhorn (President of the World Society of Parasitologists). The basis of the drug is no synthetics, but a natural extract of the Neem tree. The shampoo not only kills lice and nits in one application: it is completely natural, hypoallergenic, does not irritate the scalp, and therefore safe even for the smallest children (age 3 years and older).

The principle of operation of Leisner is twofold. On the one hand, the agent destroys the waterproof layer on the body of lice and the cocoon of nits - they simply choke and die from Leisner. On the other hand, the drug helps to soften the "glue" with which the nits are attached to the hair. As a result, the nits fall off on their own, and even careful combing after treatment is not required. The application time of Leisner is 10 minutes. And no reprocessing is required.

In general, no matter what lice appear in any particular case, ways to get rid of them are well known and developed. But it is better to prevent the infection itself and protect yourself and loved ones from it.

Young girls, if your child has lice, then buy Lavinal at the pharmacy, a very effective remedy, the kit comes with an iron comb and a hat. It is necessary to sprinkle the head with this spray so that the hair is wet, then put on this cap and sit in it for 30 minutes, and then rinse with shampoo and comb out the wet hair with a comb. Preferably on a white cloth so you can see everything. Really helps. I brought everything to my child at once.

Everywhere they write - white nits. My daughter brings black nits from the kindergarten for the second time. They are very small, barely noticeable, and I can’t find a louse in any way. The first time I took it out of the pharmacy and combed it with the smallest comb (after processing according to the instructions, the nits turned out to be alive), so the girl had to tear her long, wavy hair. Removed all living creatures. I checked with a comb, again, after 3-4 months, nits appeared again. Educators answer that the rest of the children, supposedly, everything is in order. What should I do, because my child has a terrible allergy to these drugs from pharmacies. When it comes into contact with the skin, it becomes purple in color (when washed).

I am a hairdresser. Mothers constantly deal with such a problem as pediculosis (lice). At home, alcohol (or vodka) and vinegar in a proportion of 2 tbsp will help you. spoons of alcohol, 1 tablespoon of vinegar (for medium hair length). Lice die from alcohol, and nits burst from vinegar. Apply with foam rubber or cotton wool to the scalp, then to the entire length of the hair, avoiding contact with the eyes. To improve the result, put a plastic cap on your head. Leave for 10 minutes, if itching occurs, do not scratch, so as not to injure the scalp. After the exposure time of the solution has passed, remove the cap and gradually remove the parasites. Then wash your hair twice with shampoo and 1 time with balm. For some time, remove the nits, the color of which, after pickling, turns white instead of black.

My daughter had lice, I didn't know about it. She is 11 years old, she washes her own hair. She studies in the 4th grade, says that her classmates are bad and will laugh if they find out. And I, they say, will call the teacher, I will say that lice. And she will tell the students. There was no nurse at that time, she quit. One day I come home from work and my daughter is asleep. Her hair is long on her ass, I go up to her. I want to put a pillow under my head. I look, and she has some redness on her head. I look closely, and these are lice bites. At first I didn't understand what it was. I look closely, and something glitters there - it was a nit. I immediately ran to the pharmacy, bought Paranit on the advice of the saleswoman. Woke her up, told her why she didn't talk and if she knew. She told everything (as I said above). In general, I took a comb, and she has a lot of lice there. I combed her head once, and 5-10 nits-lice fell out. She said she didn't tell me for 2 months. She had lice all over the sink. I told her that this is unrealistic, her hair is long. We went to the hairdresser. Now she has a caret. The lice were taken out in 4 days.

I recently encountered this problem, I myself am a very clean person, but a couple of weeks ago I noticed that I began to scratch my head often.I asked my husband to look, he said that everything was fine, but it got to the point that I combed the whole back of my head to the point of blood. And somehow in the bathroom I got a louse out of my hair! Oh my god, I'm very suspicious and couldn't wait another day knowing I had these parasites.
And now I’ll tell you how I got lice out in 1 day without spending a dime. I didn’t even have thoughts to go online and look for good advice, without thinking, I took the usual Dichlorvos and sprayed my whole head ... Although I have long hair, I was not ready to part with them. I sprayed it all over my head, then covered and tied my head with a plastic bag to keep it from weathering. And for 2 hours I walked like this with the desire for the death of these parasites. At the end of time, I took a regular comb with teeth and began to comb out to make sure they were dead! After that, I thoroughly washed my hair with soap. And after that I turned on my logic: since I killed the lice, I had to somehow get rid of the nits, because they might not die ... I took a hairdryer, turned on the hottest air and walked it over the scalp closer to the roots, so that burn whatever is left.
And you will not believe it - in the morning I went to my grandmother and asked to examine my head, she did not find a single lice. And what's more, I found completely burned nits that could be combed out with a comb. Since then, I have not had a single lice, and my hair is completely healthy. But based on this, I began to be more attentive to things, and henceforth I carry my comb with me. And knowing a person little, I do not enter into bodily contact with him in order to avoid this muck! Perhaps, for someone who does not have such an opportunity to buy expensive products at a pharmacy, my method will help. ))

The first time I didn’t recognize them at all, my daughter was scratching her head, but I thought maybe the shampoo didn’t fit, and when I started combing her, she crawled out alone. My daughter is 14 years old. Literally 3 weeks ago brought this muck. At first, her head just itched, just a little bit, and then she asked me to look at her head. Her hair is not very long, but very thick, so there were many problems with combing. I bought hellebore water. Did not help. I bought nude. It didn't help either. Dichlorvos tried and also to no avail. We decided not to buy any more funds, because. it is very expensive (1 bottle of nudes and hellebore water was not enough for her hair). We fought for 2 weeks, nothing happened. I decided to buy a hair dye of the same color as her natural hair color. This is the only thing that helped. The lice just fell off by themselves when they washed off the paint. And then she straightened her hair with an iron and burned the nits. This is the only thing that helped.
All this, it turns out, came from her unscrupulous classmate, with whom my daughter has to sit at the same desk.

They also used Pediculen-Ultra, as in the video, BUT: how my mother managed to comb everything out in 25 minutes, I still don’t understand, they showed such nonsense! First, you first need to comb your hair with a regular comb, so as not to tear the child's hair wet and rolled. Secondly, you need to comb out, starting from the forehead, carefully along a thin strand, shifting one strand to another, because. nits are very firmly attached to the hair, it is even difficult to pull them off the hair with nails. Well, or as they suggested here, first burn them with a hairdryer or an iron, maybe then it will be easier to tear them off the hair. And thirdly, I have two daughters, and I spent at least an hour on each. At the same time, she combed out the eldest daughter (she has hair up to her waist) 3 times and each time found up to 50 nits.

There is also advice: mix vegetable oil with aromatic (preferably tea tree or lavender), lice do not tolerate this smell, and they die from oil without oxygen. Good for hair, and smells nice, and does not irritate the scalp. The youngest daughter's head was already combed to the wounds, so this is the only thing from which she did not scream. But Pediculen and hellebore water she had to wash off almost immediately, because. It was scary to watch the child's reaction.

Nits hatch within 7 days. It is necessary to comb out with a special comb, preferably with an iron one. Vinegar will NOT help. Who has a small budget, you can withdraw with diesel fuel or kerosene for 40-60 minutes, repeat 3 times every 7 days.

After treating the hair with products, I highly recommend walking through the hair with an iron to straighten the hair. We face the problem of lice every year, as the child goes to the camp all summer. So you have to process every three weeks all summer and use an iron. Nothing else helps

My daughter brought this infection before the first of September. She is 13 years old. I was horrified. Three days before I found out what they were, I braided pigtails, but there was nothing. The hair is long and dark. At school, her friend discovered her daughter. And I have no doubt that they are from her. A girl from a dysfunctional family. And about cleanliness and hygiene, along the way, they do not know. Somehow brought Pedilin. But every day I check my head. One or two come across, but nits, thank God, no. Where they come from is not clear. Linen, bed change often. Washes hair every other day. The daughter no longer communicates with that girl. Finally it came to her not to communicate with her. She forbade her for a long time, but this girl is like a bath sheet) Advise how to get rid of this infection once and for all.

Whoever has lice, remember one name - permethrin. This is an active substance that is included in products for people, whether it is shampoo, ointment or "spray", and in dog-cat products, such as "Bars". In the pharmacy, this thing is sold in ugly packaging, inexpensive, smells of alcohol. Shampoos, of course, are more expensive, but there is no point in overpaying. Permethrin.

We turned to them when the children had lice. I really liked their efficiency and quality of work. They arrived on the same day to us and after four hours both of my children were with absolutely clean heads. And that's without any toxic chemicals.

I'll tell you a story: when my mother was young and lived in a hostel (work allocated, temporary housing), 3 more girls lived in the room. One of them had long hair (the girl is clean). Now, mother said, every night she combed the lice on the white rag, great multitude. Surprisingly, these were her personal lice, the rest were not infected. There is an opinion that lice leave the body from stress, from malnutrition, from an excess of vitamins, in general, when you are starving. Another story: a lump formed on the head, the doctors cut it, and from there colonies of lice began to crawl out, they began to be pushed back and the wound was sewn up (this was the case with a woman). Lice have nowhere to come from. If you wash your head and collect raw hair in a bun without drying, there will be lice. Not everyone, but they will. Bottom line - they crawl out of the body.

Do not think that lice are only for girls. My 4-year-old son surprised me so much ... The hair is short, but, apparently, delicious. We go to the garden, the teacher said that they didn’t find anyone, it means “from nerves”. Good thing I now know it's not true. I often looked at the head. They treated Paranix with shampoo, but it was a little easier for us, they brought it out. I watch every day now.

At one time you will never get rid of lice if you do not comb out the nits. And no superfood drug from the pharmacy also kills nits, it will only destroy your lice. After processing, be sure to remove the nits, or comb out. If there is no time, then be sure to do a control treatment 5 days after the first.

After Paranit, the nits are dead, dried, as written in the instructions. So don't overthink it. Taken out in one go. In the composition of anise and essential oils, non-toxic and odorless. The lice suffocate and the nits become dehydrated. If you are worried, you can repeat the procedure after 7 days, so that for sure, suddenly which one survived on the comb or somewhere else. The main thing is not to forget to wash all bed linen and clothes at 60 degrees, vacuum the surfaces and sofas, and put what is not washed in a plastic bag for 2 weeks (but not in the cold, as they live there longer hungry). Good luck.

Paranit did not help us. A few years ago, my daughter brought these parasites from kindergarten.Than they didn’t try to get lice out, including paranit. They reappeared. Tried kerosene - also did not help. Only the scalp was burned. At first I thought that my daughter was complaining so much about the burning sensation, and when she smeared herself, I thought I couldn’t stand it for half an hour, my scalp was insanely hot. I thought that I would have to cut off my hair, and my hair to the priests. But then we were told to try hellebore water, it is sold in a pharmacy for a penny. With hellebore water, we brought out lice for 2 times, the second time was a control one, just in case. And, thank God, they got rid of it. If we had been prompted immediately, we would have saved a lot of money and nerves.

      1) Kerosene was originally sold in pharmacies as a MEDICINE! Perfectly helps with aching joints, sore throat (cleaned) and, by the way, greatly improves the condition of the hair (if there is no allergy).

      2) The time to wet your head and put on the bag takes much less than sitting half a day while the aunt combs her hair.

      3) The cost is generally incomparable: 50 rubles for kerosene and a couple of thousand for combing.

      4) Hair, of course, is useful to comb, but think about the trauma of a four-hour procedure.

Well, we bought Hygia - a lice remedy for lice, washed my hair, combed it out with a comb and everything is fine. But my joy did not last long ... In April, lice again. But it immediately became clear that we had someone with lice in our class. But we dared not say cool. I washed my hair again with Hygia. It's already summer. And I have again ... Lice appear from sand ... This happens in sandboxes, children throw sand at each other. At the slightest hit of sand on the head, the next day there will be lice. It is necessary at the same moment to wash several times with shampoo, after combing out all the sand from the hair. I wish you all not to get lice. Good luck!

BARSIK was dropped on the pigtail during the day - and by the evening there are no problems. People, do not make a tragedy, do not spend money, overpay. In kindergartens and camps I constantly warn mothers. Either they don't hear, or they don't want to. But my children, with thick and long pigtails, I destroy in one go.

All insects such as cockroaches, lice, fleas evolve from microbes under certain conditions. Evolution at this level happens very quickly, and if it took millions of years to create an elephant, then a week is maximum for a louse. So take care of hygiene and do not become a breeding ground for lice.

I have 3 daughters, and they also encountered these lice. Every year in the summer I send them to the camp, they brought "unexpected guests". I want to tell you how I got rid of it. I can say about nits: we had both dark and light ones. The dark ones click, which means they are alive. And the light ones - the louse has already hatched, they do not click. I sprayed Nyuda, it helped. And hellebore water too, but only lice die from hellebore water, but nits remain. I had to choose by hand, nothing else. The hair is long. And if at least one nit remains alive, then a louse will hatch in a week - and again on a new one.
